When I first received Conceptual Physical Science Explorations I knew it would help me become a better middle school science teacher. Teaching middle school general science has a few challenges. I am expected to be an expert on a wide variety of topics. As my expertise in graduate school was biology, my physical science knowledge was a little thin. On the very first day of receiving Explorations, my 8th graders were starting a unit on properties of matter. I flipped open the text to Physical and chemical properties of matter and adapted some of the material to a challenge that my students could solve. The students were required to identify and then create a physical and a chemical reaction.
A few days later some students asked my how polarized sunglasses were better than regular sunglasses. Not knowing the science behind the products together we used Explorations to find out. The explanation was clear and understandable and supported by pictures and diagrams.
In just a few days the 8th graders will start their science fair experiments. The students will choose from a wide variety of topics relating to their interest and I have to become an expert on each one in order effectively guide them. I know that Explorations will be an invaluable resource for me as well as some of my more advanced students.
Conceptual Physical Science Explorations has helped me to adapt big ideas to 8th grade learners, answered specific questions of student interest and will provide a great resource during the science fair. Thanks for making complex ideas understandable, fun and interesting!!!!
