Due to the young ages I teach I put the drinking bird and glass of water on a table out of reach but within sight of the children. The older one - 3.5 years - came back to the table repeatedly to watch the bobbing action.

My first bird was a Dodo destined for extinction - he kept tipping backwards, and then finally gave up the ghost with his head tucked between his legs. Arbor replace him with a new bird, and she works fine.
at last a chance to share our memories!

I use the drinking bird as a culminating experience on a "States of Matter" chapter. The students write a detailed explanation for the bird's movement in terms of kinetic energy, vapor pressure. Unfortunately, the birds are so fragile that I can't allow the kids to touch them. Took about 30 seconds for them to break when I tried that.
Easy to use and effective demonstration

It ran for 48 Hrs in a display case

Cons:
Get stuck some times
Best Uses:
In hallway display case
I placed one bird in the display case of the new science building, next to an hygrometer/thermometer.
The challenge: "Does it violate the second law of thermodynamis - where are the two temperatures? Hint: wet your finger."
I also had a tiny Nd magnet on the axis and a Hall probe to track the inclination versus time

I love watching the dippy birds go! These little guys entertain me when I get a spare moment from the work day.
It takes a little bending of the arms to keep the bird from getting stuck sometimes when it dips down.
Fun buy, enjoy!
