Comments about Arbor Scientific Energy Ball:

This is a great opening activity for a group or for a lesson in circuits. Everyone stands and makes a circuit by touching fingers, with the leader holding the ball and touching one electrode. When the person at the end of the circle closes the circuit by touching the other electrode, most are surprised to realize that they are part of a circuit. If you're corny enough, you can have the group close their eyes and chant: "Ohmmmmm.." An interesting note: If someone is dehyrated, the circuit won't work. This happened to me once, and I asked the cross-country runner to step outside the circle...it worked! This is a surprise for students and adults alike.

Comments about Arbor Scientific Energy Ball:

Your entire class can create a circuit by making a large circle and touching fingertips. The bulb/ball works only when the circuit is complete, so you can demonstrate open and closed circuits by having various students in the circle "untouch" fingers. I had heard that a student does not conduct the small current well if he/she is dehydrated. One day, when the demo did not work, I asked the young woman whom I knew was a long-distance runner (and likely dehydrated) to step out of the circle--and it worked!
