I love using demos that yield unexpected results. This one is perfect to extend the ideas of basic mechanics.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
The Magnetic Accelerator kit works well as an introduction to observations. I begin using it as a Newtons Cradle with the ball bearings before asking the students if I could be a Jedi. Then by colliding the magnet, they see the end ball bearing shoot off. A+++ Product
Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
I use this product to force kids to think about energy transfers and the Law of Conservation of Momemtum (usually after suing a "Neton's Cradle"). Students can usually figure out the trick by the second or third trial.
The order of the balls and magent matter and high friciton can limit the accueracy. The students really enjoy this demosntration, but be sure to appoint someone ball catcher and to preform on a level elevated surface.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
Sometimes the metal balls stick to the track. The magnet ball is very, very poewrful.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
As others have said, this is a very dramatic demonstration. After one or two tries, the kids usually catch on that I'm using a different ball. The clanging of the magnetic ball with a steel ball helps give it away. The only problem I encountered -- and the instructions do warn about this -- is that if you leave the magnetic ball touching the other balls, then the others balls become temporarily magnetized, lessening the effect of the demonstration. They demagnetized for me after a few days.

This item can be used to teach at any age level. It can be a 'magic trick' for really young kids, or it can be used to discuss energy transformations with older students.

Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
What a fun way to provide a discrepant event to shock students into remembering Newton's Laws. Not something that you'll use every day, but at this low price, that's fine. Add it to a newtonian demonstrator and you have a great lesson.

Comments about Arbor Scientific Magnetic Accelerator:
This is the newest discrepant event that every classroom must have. The difference that this device has over other similar ones sold elsewhere is the detail in the steel balls/neodymium magnet sphere has been made. This makes Arbor's magnetic accelerator UNIQUE! Run this when you teach momentum and energy and even after performing this discrepant demo, your students will not see the secret! Great discussions can be generated about conservation of momentum and Potential/Kinetic energy. Show it to other science experts... they will not have an answer for its behavior!
