Comments about Arbor Scientific Small Clear Compasses (20/pack):

We used these compasses to plot the magnetic field of different shapes of magnets, as well as for plotting the magnetic field in a straight wire and coiled wires (solenoid) as a current passes through the wire.

Comments about Arbor Scientific Small Clear Compasses (20/pack):

Using these small compasses instead of iron filings makes set-up and clean-up much easier. They work well to show magnetic fields around magnets or around current-carrying wires. My favorite simple lab activity is to have students run DC current through a long, coated wire and run the wire through a small hole in a piece of cardboard. Hold the cardboard horizontally, with the wire running vertically, and place 6-8 small compasses on the cardboard near the wire. Have students turn the current on and off and reverse the current, applying the right hand rule to the compass needle directions in each situation.
