Not able to get it to work. Tried several different things, no success.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Had to push the handle down much harder than directed and the device itself was too flimsy and the syringe broke off of the base the 3rd time we attempted to do the experiment. very dissatisfied with this product. had to give it one star because the rating system won't let you give it zero :(
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
I used the fire syringe as a project in my physics class. It amazed all of my classmates when the tube was suddenly aflame. However, when I tried to do it again in chemistry class the next day, it didn't work! You need to hit it just right for it to work.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
The fire syringe can be used to relate concepts associated with gas laws, phases of matter, heat vs. work, laws of thermodynamics, and internal combustion engines.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This is the second fire syringe our school has purchased, and the first one of this exact model. This design is far better than our other fire syringe. The build quality is about the same in both, but this product has a large base and a large plunger handle. Very easy to use. Definitley worth the money.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Good demo once you compress it hard enough. Reguires some effort and you need a rod with cloth to dry the inside of the tube after each use.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This was a real hit with my science-oriented 8 yr old. Also attracted lots of attention from adults. It has had much use by now - but not any abuse - and the threads of the screw-on plunger cap - used for custioning the hand - have worn. This has been fixed with some teflon tape, but I suspect will be an on going problem. Keep some silicon lubricant handy, too. Extra O-rings are included. Palms get sore after 10 or 20 uses, but it doesn't seem to stop anyone.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This gadget is a great way to demonstate the Gas Laws equation. It's like looking into the inside of a diesel engine.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This is a great demo to show Charles law and to help students see that the kinetic energy of gas molecules is fixed even if volume changes. The device works well once you learn how to push the plunger just the right way. So it is something that a teacher might practice then use. It is harder for a student to use without practice.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
over the years I have purchased about 50 fire syringes at ~ $29 each and the students broke all but 10 of them. They had a glass testtube that would always break. finally this product will burn a bigger piece of cotton and does not break
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
We might just convince the machine shop teacher to build us a metal version. It would be fun to have a 2-stroke diesel in class. By the way, it works with dryer lint or coffee creamer too.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Much more durable than other brands that I have purchased over the years. Very reliable...normally ignites within two compressions. Impressive flash is very visable to students. Ignition tube cleans very easily.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This product comes with everything you need, including the cotton and replacement O-rings. Tip: use just a whisp of cotton - it still makes a nice, visible flash. I used it in a classroom of 26 students and everyone could see the flame. Be sure to clean it out before the next use by simply wrapping some Kleenex around a pencil and swabbing out the entire tube. If some of the O-ring lubricant gets on the cotton, you may not get a flame, so avoid the walls when putting in a fresh piece of cotton.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Students *love* seeing fire, and the demo is really effective at getting kids excited and interested.
However, this is recommended with reservations for one main reason. On a moist day (rainy outside) I had trouble getting the cotton to ignite, presumably because of moisture content in the cylinder kept the compression from heating the air.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
This is much sturdier and more stable than others I have used, and appears to be truly non-breakable.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Great, affordable model of a classic physics demonstration. This fire syringe will be a personal and classroom hit. Nothing brings enthusiasm to science like explosions and fire - explosion is minimal but the suprise of fire and is there! This is money well spent.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Fire Syringe:
Easy to use. Try to use on a dry day so water vapor doesn't interfere with the flash.
