I was so psyched about this until I used in with my classes. The motor disconnected from the wires by my second class period. Since I had two, I was frantically trying to find a way to repair it. No such luck. The alarm is also a piece of junk. It wouldn't not keep the same pitch so it was impossible to observe the change when tossed. I ended up making up a new alarm with my own materials that were highly successful in my last class period. Then I realized how cheaply the thing was made. I could have bought the foam ball, cut a slit, and added an alarm system with a SWITCH. What a rip off!
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
Used to demonstrate doppler effect... the one addition that I added was to put the ball on the end of a string with a net holding the ball....swing the ball horizontally above your head... the effect becomes very evident.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
Doppler ball has variable tone (defective) and takes some fiddling to make constant. Tone is kind of quiet and the battery unit must be placed very near the edge of the opening to be heard effectively.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
I used this for my physical science lab. I lined them up and threw the ball past their heads. They got the concept! It was nice that the ball is soft as my aim wasn't always great.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
I just have students throw it to each other before and after I've explained the Doppler effect. It really helps their understanding.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
The ideas for use were helpful. I demo'd it for my students and then let them toss it around. The demo was more effective for teaching the Doppler effect than the tossing - they were too interested in catch and throw to pay close attention to the sound change.
Comments about Arbor Scientific Doppler Ball:
it is useful for classroom demo, but should build the set (battery, buzzer, and switch) inside of the ball.
