Hearing is believing: Can sound travel in a vacuum?
Showing that sound requires a medium to travel through requires specific equipment, and it's the only way to really demonstrate the concept. This bell jar (named for its shape) and vacuum plate is supplied with a battery-operated electric bell. The bell is mounted on springs to dampen the vibrations, so students can clearly hear the drastic reduction in sound when the air is removed. 8.5" diameter, 11.5" tall, and requires 2 AA batteries and vacuum pump not included.
