Use this discrepant event to test students' understanding of density, buoyancy, and thermal expansion!
The set consists of two rods. The aluminum rod floats in cool water and sinks in warm. The PVC rod does the reverse - sinks in cool and floats in warm. Try it, scratch your head, and use science to figure it out! Explanation included, just in case. Please note that while there may be variations in rod dimensions or densities, the rods are perfectly balanced for the experiment to work correctly.
