Product details and specifications for the Big Thunder Drum.

Rumbling Resonance!

You'll be amazed at the depth of sound that comes from our Big Thunder Drum. Just shake it, and the vibrations in the spring are transmitted through the angled drumhead to produce a thundering rumble that will shake your students in their seats! The thunder resonates long after you stop shaking the drum. The basic drum makes a similar, but much less thunderous sound.

Thunder drums "thunder" when vibrations in a spring are transmitted through a drumhead and amplified in an open tube. The vibrating spring causes the drumhead to vibrate, which in turn causes the air inside the drum to vibrate. The air in the drum begins to resonate, and the volume of the sound increases.

Even a small vibration in the spring can grow into a large thundering sound. The Big Thunder Drum has an angled head to increase the drumhead area. The larger drumhead creates a louder sound in the drum. Your students will watch open-mouthed as "thunder" rolls through your classroom.

Activities and Uses

Show how the vibration in the spring becomes a large sound. Make different sounds by making the spring vibrate differently. Demonstrate how the eardrum works by speaking into the end of the drum and feeling the vibration that travels down the spring.

Science Standards

In using this product, national and states’ science education standards are covered. Some examples are provided here. These are representative, however. Check with your state to find the exact standards.

  • Waves, including sound and seismic waves, waves on water, and light waves, have energy and can transfer energy when they interact with matter.

  • Explain how sound travels through different media.

  • Relate characteristics of sounds that we hear to properties of sound waves.

  • Demonstrate the application of acoustic principles such as in echolocation, musical instruments, noise pollution, and sonograms.
