The Running Parachute is a fun tool for introducing drag and resistance to your force and motion lessons. Sprint a distance (or have a student do it) without the parachute and time yourself. Then attach the parachute and sprint the same distance. After you reach about 70% of your maximum speed, the chute is deployed and resistance and drag are applied. How much did your time differ between the two scenarios? Enhance the lesson working into the discussion how scientists and engineers use drag and resistance concepts to design race cars, rockets, airplanes, bicycle equipment, and much more.
