Visually demonstrate the conversion of thermal energy into mechanical work to create electrical energy!
This Stirling Engine is a hot air engine that uses the expansion and contraction of air under the influence of a temperature change to convert thermal energy into mechanical work and electrical energy. The electrical energy is then used to power an LED bulb. The principle of the engine is simple. A denatured alcohol burner creates a temperature difference in the permanently sealed cylinder. The air inside expands and contracts, moving a piston and a crank shaft in a rotary motion. The rotary motion drives a second piston, which creates pressure in a second air-tight cylinder. The pressure forces the second piston to "push back" on the crank shaft and turn the wheel. This process continues as long as the alcohol is burning, powering the mini-dynamo and thus, lighting the LED! Alcohol not included. 70% Isopropyl alcohol works well and is readily available. Other alcohols should work as well. Fully-assembled. ISO9001 Certified. Dimensions: 7"L x 3.5"W x 3.5"H. Includes spare cylinders (1 each), crankshaft pin, cylinder o-ring, and allen wrenches for removing damaged cylinders.
