The Digital e/m Apparatus is a great way to demonstrate Lorentz Force!
Designed to be compact and in a light-shielding enclosure, the Digital e/m Apparatus which is also commonly known as a “Lorentz Force Demonstrator” is used to show magnetic and electrostatic deflection, measure e/m, and investigate electron beam behavior.
The Digital e/m Apparatus has a sharply focused electron beam that is projected into a vacuum containing a trace of inert gas. Ionization of the gas around the electron beam maintains the sharp focus of the beam and creates a glowing discharge which marks the path of the electrons. The apparatus shows deflection of the beam by transverse electric fields and by magnetic fields of various orientations. The e/m value can be found by bending the electron beam into a circular path with a homogeneous magnetic field and measuring the radius of the circular beam path, the strength of the magnetic field, and the accelerating voltage of the electron gun.
- Fine Beam Tube: A low-pressure 16-cm diameter inert gas-filled tube is mounted vertically and can rotate 180 degrees for fine adjustment of the horizontally-projected electron beam and observation of spiral orbits.
- Light-tight enclosure: The entire apparatus is in a light-tight enclosure, very convenient for operating in normal lighting conditions.
- Built-in Digital Voltage Supply: Sets of accelerating and deflecting electrodes have built-in voltage supplies with digital readouts.
- Built-in Digital Current Supply: A pair of permanently-mounted Helmholtz coils has built-in variable current power supply with digital readout.
- Measurement Aides: Metric scale and viewing aides to accurately determine the electron-orbit radius are included.
