Additional Details

In this inquiry-based lab activity, students are provided with eight sample materials to test in both water and sulfuric acid. A dilute acid is utilized so students are able to observe acidic effects in a single class period.

The environmental impact of acid rain on both natural and built environments is underscored in this lab exercise. The concept of buffers, or an area of vegetation present on the borders of a body of water, is introduced. Students are encouraged to not only look at the problem of acid rain, but to also examine and value solutions to mitigate harm. This immersive learning experience empowers students to explore the complexities of chemical interactions and their consequences in real-world contexts.
