The bell jar (named for its shape) and vacuum plate are supplied with a battery-operated electric ringer. The ringer is mounted on rubber feet to dampen the vibrations, so students can clearly hear the drastic reduction in sound when the air is removed.

Showing that sound requires a medium to travel through requires specific equipment, and it's the only way to really demonstrate the concept.
