Superconductivity and magnetic levitation demo
Introduce one of modern physics’ most striking phenomena with Arbor Scientific’s Economy Superconductivity Kit. This classroom-ready demonstration features a large superconductive disc formulated from the oxides of Yttrium, Barium, and Copper in the famous 1-2-3 chemical combination. When cooled with liquid nitrogen, the disc dramatically levitates a magnet, revealing the Meissner Effect and making superconductivity, magnetism, and quantum behavior visible and unforgettable.
Why Teachers Love the Superconductivity Kit
- High-impact, hands-on demonstration: Students see superconductivity in action as the cooled disc levitates above the magnet, illustrating a phenomenon usually seen only in advanced labs.
- Complete starter kit: Includes the superconductive disc, neodymium magnet, petri dish cover, and low-temperature plastic forceps — everything needed for the demonstration.
- Affordable and accessible: More economical than larger levitation sets, making it practical for classroom use and multiple demonstrations.

What You Can Teach with the Economy Superconductivity Kit
Perfect for high school and introductory college physics courses exploring:
- Superconductivity & critical temperature: Demonstrate how electrical resistance drops to zero and magnetic fields are expelled at low temperatures (Meissner Effect).
- Magnetic levitation: Observe diamagnetic repulsion as the superconductive disc levitates above a magnet when cooled.
- Quantum vs. classical behavior: Contrast everyday magnetic interactions with quantum-driven superconductive states.
- Energy state transitions: Discuss phase changes and how temperature influences material properties.
How It Works
To demonstrate superconductivity and the Meissner Effect:
- Cool the disc: Place the superconductive disc in its petri dish and pour liquid nitrogen (not included) over it until it reaches 77 K, well below its critical temperature of 92 K.
- Introduce the magnet: Using the low-temperature plastic forceps, place the included neodymium magnet above the chilled disc. As the disc enters the superconducting state, it expels magnetic fields and levitates the magnet — a dramatic visual of diamagnetism.
- Observe and explain: The magnetic levitation continues as long as the disc remains below its critical temperature, making the invisible principles of superconductivity both visible and intuitive.
