Show electromagnetic induction and opposing magnetic forces

Electromagnetism doesn’t have to be abstract. Arbor Scientific’s Faraday’s Law & Lenz’s Law Complete Demo Set is an educator-innovated, Arbor-exclusive system that contains everything needed for a show-stopping electromagnetism demonstration. Students watch in amazement as a powerful magnet drops into a copper collar and nearly comes to a dead stop. It looks like magic—but this demo set reveals what’s really happening: it’s not magic, it’s physics.

Why Teachers Love the Faraday’s Law and Lenz’s Law Complete Demo Set
  • Turns abstract into concrete: Instead of relying only on hand rules, students observe real, tangible effects and use them to drive discussion and inquiry.
  • Built for open-ended exploration: The dramatic slowing of the falling magnet naturally prompts prediction, explanation, and evidence-based reasoning.
  • Educator-innovated and classroom-tested: Designed by teachers to clarify the deeper relationship between electricity and magnetism—not just demonstrate it.
  • Supports multiple teaching styles: Works equally well as a quick “wow” demo, a guided investigation, or a data-supported analysis.

What You Can Teach with the Complete Demo Set

Ideal for high school physics, AP Physics, IB, and introductory college courses:

  • Faraday’s Law of Induction: How changing magnetic flux induces an emf
  • Lenz’s Law: Direction of induced current and opposing magnetic fields
  • Electromagnetic induction: Motion, fields, and current working together
  • Energy conservation: Mechanical energy transformed into electrical (and thermal) energy
  • Quantitative analysis: Relating motion and distance to induced voltage and time graphs
  • Scientific reasoning: Using evidence to build and test models of electromagnetic systems

Take Your Demo a Step Further

Move from observation to analysis by plugging in a voltage probe to quantify what students are seeing. Any voltage probe with 4 mm banana plug connectors can be looped into the circuit to measure the potential difference across the solenoid, and the included stackable banana plugs make setup fast and flexible.

With real voltage–time data in front of them, students can connect the slowing magnet to Faraday’s Law, Lenz’s Law, and energy conservation. As the distance and speed of the falling magnet change, the graph changes too—challenging students to interpret results, identify patterns, and explain the physics behind them.

Already Have a Magnet and Solenoid?

If you already have a large neodymium magnet and an air-core solenoid, the Faraday’s Law & Lenz’s Law Base Demo Set (98-8500) may be the right fit for your classroom. It provides the core components needed to demonstrate induction and Lenz’s Law using equipment you already own.
