Digital Caliper with LCD Display
Measure outside, inside, depth, and step dimensions with one tool
The Digital Caliper with LCD Display is a hardened stainless steel measuring tool built around a linear capacitive sensor, the kind of mechanism that turns a jaw's physical position into a digital readout instead of a line on a scale. It has four measuring modes built into one body: external jaws for outside dimensions, internal jaws for bore and slot widths, a step jaw for measuring ledges, and a depth rod for holes and recesses. Students slide the jaws into place with the thumb roller, lock the position with the screw, and read the result straight off the large LCD screen.
A single button switches the display between millimeters and inches, and the zero function resets the reading at any jaw position, so students can take differential measurements (the difference between two points) without doing the subtraction themselves. At 0.01 mm resolution and accuracy as tight as ±0.02 mm on the shorter ranges, it holds up to real manufacturing-tolerance work, not just classroom demonstrations.
The caliper ships in a durable plastic storage case and runs on one included LR-44 battery. Tightening the lock screw before storage keeps the jaws from drifting and the display from waking up on its own, which is what drains the battery fastest.
Why Teachers Love the Digital Caliper
Four Measuring Modes in One Tool – External, internal, step, and depth jaws cover most classroom and shop measurement tasks without switching instruments.
Instant Unit Switching and Zero-Reset – Toggle between mm and inches with one button, and zero the display at any position for quick differential readings.
Precision to the Hundredth of a Millimeter – 0.01 mm resolution and accuracy down to ±0.02 mm make the readings solid enough to use for real tolerance checks, not just estimates.

What You Can Teach with the Digital Caliper
Grades 6–8 (Middle School)
- Comparing precision tools: ruler vs. caliper for the same object
- Reading and recording measurements to the nearest hundredth of a millimeter
- Measuring the dimensions of everyday objects, hardware, and 3D printed parts
Grades 9–10 (Introductory Physics)
- Significant figures and how instrument resolution limits reported precision
- Internal vs. external measurement: bore diameter compared to outer diameter of the same part
- Depth and step measurements for volume and density calculations
High School Physics
- Propagating measurement uncertainty from instrument accuracy (±0.02 to ±0.04 mm depending on range) into calculated results
- Repeatability testing: taking multiple measurements of the same object to check instrument consistency
- Differential measurement using the zero-reset function to isolate a single dimension
AP Physics / Engineering / STEM Electives
- Checking manufacturing tolerances on nuts, bolts, and other machined hardware
- Verifying dimensional accuracy of 3D printed models against CAD specifications
- Quality control exercises: comparing a batch of parts against a tolerance range
- Collecting high-precision distance data for lab experiments where a ruler isn't accurate enough
