Microwave Polarizer Pair

Demonstrate crossed polars, Brewster's Angle, and the intermediate polarizer effect with 3 cm microwaves

The Microwave Polarizer Pair consists of two steel grills with 6 mm parallel slots at 9 mm spacing. Microwaves are transverse: the electric field oscillates in a fixed plane. When a grill's slots align with the E-field direction, the wave passes through. When the slots run perpendicular to the field, the wave is blocked. Rotating one grill relative to the other varies transmission from full signal to near zero, and the connected receiver's loudspeaker makes that intensity change audible in real time.

Three distinct demonstrations come from this pair. Crossed polars shows signal extinction when the two grills are oriented at 90° to each other. Brewster's Angle demonstrates polarization by reflection. The intermediate polarizer effect, where inserting a 45° grill between two crossed polars restores partial transmission, gives students a concrete, audible version of what the crossed-polarizer experiment shows in quantum mechanics, relevant for discussions of quantum measurement and the quantum eraser.

Each grill has a handle that fits into a standard retort stand clamp or can be held and rotated by hand, making repositioning fast during a demonstration.
