Run every microwave wave experiment — whole-class demos through quantitative lab work

The Microwave Transmitter, Receiver, Probe Receiver Bundle brings together all three core units. The Transmitter generates a directional 10 GHz beam. The Receiver detects signal across a wide area for fast, whole-class qualitative demonstrations. The Probe Receiver detects signal at a single point for spatial mapping and data collection. Two 9 V PSUs are included: one for the transmitter and one for whichever receiver the lesson calls for, since only one receiver is in use at a time.

The plate receiver and the probe receiver serve different purposes in a microwave lab. The plate receiver works when the goal is for the whole class to hear reflection, diffraction, or interference as it happens. The probe receiver works when students need to locate fringe positions, measure amplitude at specific points, or connect to an oscilloscope for quantitative analysis. This bundle covers both.

Add the Microwave Accessory Set (97-6404) for Young's slits, single-slit diffraction, and Michelson interferometry. Add the Microwave Polarizer Pair (97-6405) for polarization demonstrations including Malus's Law and the intermediate polarizer effect.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Two Receivers for Two Teaching Modes: the plate receiver handles qualitative whole-class demos where every student needs to hear the effect; swap to the probe for lab sessions where students map fringe positions or pull numerical data from an oscilloscope. Both units are included.

  • Wave Equations Students Verify with a Ruler: at 3 cm wavelength, fringe spacings, node positions, and reflection angles all fall in the centimeter range. Students measure interference patterns directly, calculate wavelength using d sin θ = mλ, and check the result against the known 3 cm value — making abstract wave optics equations checkable rather than assumed.

  • Expandable Without Adapter Hardware: Also buy the Accessory Set and Polarizer Pair to connect directly to these units with no extra brackets or adapters, covering the full wave optics curriculum through Michelson interferometry and Malus's Law.

What You Can Teach with the Microwave Bundle

High School Physics

  • Reflection: law of reflection verified with a flat metal plate and the plate receiver
  • Diffraction: detecting that signal reaches behind obstacles and through gaps
  • Qualitative interference: detecting signal highs and lows in a two-gap fringe pattern
  • Shielding: comparing microwave transmission through wood, metal, acrylic, and the human body
  • Transverse wave evidence: polarization demonstrations with the Polarizer Pair (sold separately)

AP Physics / Engineering / STEM Electives

  • Quantitative two-slit interference with the probe receiver: measuring fringe spacing and calculating wavelength via d sin θ = mλ
  • Standing wave mapping: scanning the probe along the beam axis between two reflectors to locate nodes and measure half-wavelength spacing
  • Malus's Law: measuring transmitted intensity vs. polarizer angle to verify I = I₀ cos² θ (with Polarizer Pair, sold separately)
  • Michelson interferometry: splitting and recombining the beam with the acrylic plate in the Accessory Set (sold separately)
  • Transmitter radiation pattern: mapping signal level as a function of angle from the horn axis
