Original Hoberman Sphere
Watch one structure triple its size in a single motion
The Original Hoberman Sphere is built from interlocking scissor-like struts that pivot at every joint. Pull the poles apart and the entire structure expands evenly in every direction at once, growing from about 9.5" to 30" in diameter in one continuous motion, then collapses back down just as smoothly.
There's no motor and nothing to calibrate; the expansion comes entirely from the geometry of the linked struts, an angulated scissor mechanism, the same mechanical principle used in real deployable structures like retractable stadium roofs and folding satellite booms. It's lightweight plastic, built to handle constant expanding and collapsing without struts binding or popping loose.
Works across a wide range: a satisfying motor-skill and focus tool for younger students, and a structural engineering demonstration of uniform scaling and transformable linkages for older ones.
Why Teachers Love It
One Motion, Uniform Expansion – A single pull scales the whole structure evenly in every direction, not a lopsided stretch in one direction.
Real Engineering Principle, Not Just a Toy – Demonstrates the same angulated-strut scissor mechanism used in real deployable structures, from retractable roofs to foldable space hardware.
Works Across Every Grade Level – A hands-on sensory and motor-skill tool for younger students, a structural engineering demo for older ones, same object either way.

What You Can Teach with the Original Hoberman Sphere
Grades Pre-K–2
- Fine motor skills through repeated expanding and collapsing
- Basic size vocabulary: bigger, smaller, expand, contract
Grades 3–5 (Upper Elementary)
- Recognizing the sphere as an approximation of a geometric solid
- Symmetry and uniform scaling versus stretching unevenly
Grades 6–8 (Middle School)
- Mechanical linkages and how a single motion can drive many joints at once
- Degrees of freedom in a mechanical system
High School / Engineering Electives
- Angulated scissor mechanisms as a class of deployable structure
- Real-world applications: retractable roofs, foldable satellite booms, expandable architecture
- Trade-offs in designing structures that transform between compact and expanded states
