What You Can Teach with the Ramp Set

Ideal for elementary, middle school, and introductory physics labs:

  • Friction: Investigate how surface texture and ramp angle influence motion.
  • Forces on an inclined plane: Explore how changing the angle affects the force required to move an object.
  • Acceleration & velocity: Observe how motion changes with slope and applied forces.
  • Basic mechanics: Study the relationships between force, motion, and direction.
  • Experimental design: Collect data, control variables, and analyze results across multiple trials.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ramp Set?

The Ramp Set is a classroom set of five adjustable ramps and five loadable trucks for investigating friction, forces on an inclined plane, and basic mechanics. Each group gets its own ramp, so students run the experiment themselves instead of watching one demo up front.

What topics can I teach with it?

Friction, forces on an incline, acceleration, velocity, and basic mechanics, plus experimental design. Students can change ramp height or angle, truck load, and surface, which gives you a clear way to talk about controlling variables.

What's included?

The Ramp Set includes 5 ramps (115 x 500 mm) and 5 loadable trucks. The Ramp Set with Friction Surfaces adds 5 friction surfaces: sandpaper, acrylic, rubber, corrugated plastic, and carpet.

What else do I need to run it?

The page lists no required extras. Most labs will want a stopwatch and a meter stick, and a Hooked Mass Set gives students known masses to test how load changes the truck's motion.

How do I keep results consistent across lab groups?

Start every group at the same ramp setting, then have them change one variable at a time: height or angle, load, or surface. When a group changes two things at once, their data won't compare with the rest of the room. Have students release the truck the same way each trial instead of giving it a push.

What grade levels or courses is it for?

The page lists elementary, middle school, and introductory physics labs. Younger students can focus on what changes when they raise the ramp or switch surfaces. Intro physics classes can take the same setup further by measuring speed and acceleration and comparing trials.

How many students or groups can use it at once?

Up to five groups. Each group gets one ramp and one truck, so every group can run the same investigation at the same time.

Does the Ramp Set align with NGSS standards for middle school?

Yes. It fits NGSS performance expectation MS-PS2-2, which asks students to plan an investigation showing that a change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on it and its mass. Students can build that investigation themselves by varying ramp angle, truck load, and surface.

How do students get quantitative data from it?

They time the truck or measure how far it travels, then calculate speed and acceleration and compare trials. Because each trial changes only one thing, students can point to the variable that caused the difference.

What's the difference between the Ramp Set and the Ramp Set with Friction Surfaces?

The base set has the 5 ramps and 5 trucks. The version with Friction Surfaces adds sandpaper, acrylic, rubber, corrugated plastic, and carpet, so surface material becomes a third variable next to angle and load. If you already own the Ramp Set, you can add the Friction Surfaces on their own.

How is the Ramp Set different from the Car and Ramp Lab or the Inclined Plane?

Both of those come with a single ramp. The Car and Ramp Lab is one 120 cm ramp with a car, masses, an inclinometer, and a pulley, and it needs a Physics Workshop Stand and a timer with photogates sold separately. The Inclined Plane is one 100 cm steel plane with a pulley that mounts on a stand sold separately. The Ramp Set gives you five shorter ramps and five trucks, so every group in the room runs the same friction and incline investigation at once.

Is the Ramp Set durable enough for daily classroom use?

Yes. It's built for repeated student use in busy classrooms, so it holds up to being adjusted and handled by many groups. It's lab equipment, labeled for educational and laboratory use only.
