Generate current with nothing but a moving magnet

The Induction Coil Set pairs a primary coil and a secondary coil, sized so one nests inside the other, with a cylindrical soft-iron core that slides through the middle. Move the core in or out of the coil, or switch current through the primary coil on and off, and a current appears in the secondary coil, with nothing touching it and no battery wired to it. Students read the result on a connected galvanometer.

Both coils use enameled copper windings for consistent, repeatable results. Because the setup is just a primary coil, a secondary coil, and a magnet, it also works as a basic transformer model. Run the same two coils that just demonstrated induction, and now they're teaching mutual induction and voltage transformation between windings.

Fits an electricity and magnetism unit covering electromagnetic induction, Lenz's law, Faraday's law, and transformer basics, from middle school through AP Physics.

Why Teachers Love It

  • Direct Demonstration of Faraday's Law – Current appears the instant the magnet moves or the circuit switches, no abstract diagram standing in for the real effect.

  • Doubles as a Transformer Model – The same primary/secondary coil pairing that shows induction also models a basic transformer, covering two topics with one setup.

  • Galvanometer-Ready – Built to pair directly with a standard galvanometer for immediate, visible current readings.

What You Can Teach with the Induction Coil Set

Grades 6–8 (Middle School)

  • Generating electric current with a moving magnet, no battery required
  • Cause and effect: motion in, current out

Grades 9–10 (Introductory Physics)

  • Faraday's Law, qualitative: what changes increase or decrease induced current
  • Predicting induced current direction with Lenz's Law
  • Comparing the coil pair to a basic transformer

High School / AP Physics

  • Quantitative Faraday's Law: EMF = -N(dΦ/dt)
  • Transformer turns ratio between primary and secondary coils
  • Testing predicted current direction against measured galvanometer readings

Products being sold are not toys. They are for Educational / Laboratory use only. They are not for use by children 12 and under.
